In his first inspirational book
“A Bipolar’s Journey –
from Torment to fulfillment”
Author Vijay Nallawala has rendered a richly textured, panoramic vision of a Bipolar’s life in the perilous years when he was diagnosed Bipolar Disorder more than a decade ago. Bipolar is a serious mental illness about which little is known in India even in this age of the internet.
Bipolar’s journey- From Torment to fulfillment- is a memoir which is eloquently demonstrated by the courageous man himself.
The most brutal and debilitating stage of this depressive Bipolar’s disease is a journey, which can be characterized by mood swings from elated high to depressive low, leading to a challenging life to those suffering from the illness.
A Bipolar’s journey is the first book, that I’ve ever read that truly captured the unnoticed tyranny of this illness – As an observation this is a very new kind of concept or subject and I hereby take this opportunity to congratulate the courageous effort by the author to depict the authenticity of his painful events along the journey in form of enlightenment, to all those who are deserving so much, to come out of this darkest tunnel.
His struggles with life and his fascinating acquaintance with a gifted, idealistic, fiercely ambitious and positive perceptions had indeed been inspiration, as he has done a tremendous job for writing such an important segment of reality, that’s unnoticed in our society. The book charts vivid, though painful descriptions reflecting back signs of determination and courage that lights hopes to many.

Welcome to A living series talk.
Thank you! Inderjit for your kind welcome, and I’m very pleased to be here as well.
Pleasure! Vijay let’s begin as I’ve already mentioned few words in our introductory segment about you but our readers would be profound and are always curious to know more about their authors, so please tell about yourself?
Sure. If you notice, there’s a gradual shift in India towards opening up, unveiling one’s darker secrets. Mental Health Awareness still has miles to go before those afflicted can claim their spot under the sun, especially in a country like India, where stigma is overpowering. The first hand experience of my recovery from Bipolar Disorder makes it easier for me to connect with my audience. I pioneered an online community for Bipolars in India and this path led to this Book. By profession, I have been an entrepreneur for over thirty years. Currently I am a digital storyteller who helps people build their personal brands.
Excellent! Authenticity comes from within and your approach to the cause is committed that’s what makes you shine Vijay and I’m sure you must be inspired by someone somewhere. Which writers inspire you?
Interestingly, the books that inspired me the most were the ones I read while growing up. Fiction gave my fertile imagination great company. So, Fredrick Forsyth, Ayn Rand, Mario Puzo, Wilbur Smith, William Goldman and Michael Crichton were among my favorites.
I did read your timeline tweet that reflects your awesomeness and that goes exactly
“A pixel in the magnificent canvas of life” and now I’m sure you’ve amazing storytelling ability so what have you written?
Yes indeed I am a curious combination of a verbal storyteller as well as a visual one! Ultimately, the story is king! It began with my personal blog..where I write about anything under the sun. Poetry, spirituality, humour and current topics are a heady mix which I touch upon most. Later the community blog was a bigger challenge, of being able to connect to a specific set of audience looking for hope and motivation.
The million plus visits on http://www.bipolarindia.com/ and more so the vibrant feedback do indicate that there has been impact. The Book led to a few important breakthroughs. For instance, I am now a regular columnist on DNA Online on the topic of Wellness of the Mind. I have also occasionally been a guest writer for other Bloggers. Linkedin, which is shaping up as a great platform to reach a new audience with its publishing feature, is also regularly used by me.
Excellent! That sounds great.
Yes indeed there’s a variety of different topics that you’re talking about through your blogs and appreciate your efforts that you’ve been able to spread the for message so well and admire your deliverance for the noble cause. Moving on, do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
In my case, except for the few short, fictional stories I have shared, the Book traces my own journey. In that sense, it was a case of what to include and then to eliminate the non-essential. I am a Mind-Mapping fan and I used mind maps extensively to plan the Book’s content, sections and chapters and so on. Overall, I do expand on a strong central idea, one that excites me.
Yes, I do agree the book relates your inspiring journey and I must admit Bipolar’s Journey did brought tears in my eyes.
What is the hardest thing about writing?
Writing flows easily and there’s hardly any effort involved in it. However, when I wrote my book, there was a constant pull in my mind: was I satisfying the ego of a creative artist or did I have the ultimate reader in mind. Actually, this is many a writer’s dilemma, I guess. I leant toward the latter, for my book is a message of hope and inspiration. Despite these self imposed curbs, I am glad that my voice came out with authenticity.
Well, again I do agree yes your work, your efforts, your cause does speak loud and clear and I’m sure it have reached wide across the community and they get benefit from this inspiring walks of your life.
What are your thoughts on spacing writers from others do you believe that writers are supposed to be solitary?
The classic assumption, isn’t it? Although I am also a people’s person, while writing I prefer my peace. The contradiction is that when I’m travelling and am at a particularly quiet place, my mind goes blank: and I don’t mind that either! Those precious moments of mindfulness are fertile ground for new seeds of creativity to be nurtured..one needs to pause ever so often in order to come back with a refreshed mind. Meditation also offers me incredibly beautiful solitude.
Hmm… Well said! I do get sometimes in my shell it’s good to reinvent about ourselves being solitide to gather some inner strength. Why do you think that other well written books just don’t sell?
A book is after all a product like any, out there in the market trying to catch the attention of prospective ‘customers’ amid thousands of other products in the same genre. Publishers seldom do justice to the potential of a book (speaking from personal experience). So, it is left to the author to get enough authentic reviews and make a splash on all channels possible. I think the most affordable platform is Social Media which many authors unfortunately do not give enough attention to. For one, it costs virtually nothing, secondly, along with the book, the author’s presence also gets established. Another facet is pricing. In a price sensitive market like India, having a highly priced book spells doom (unless of course the genre justifies it). At a more significant level, distribution (easy availability) in offline and online bookstores is a make or break factor. Thus, however well written a book might be, it has to address these three core issues for it to have any chance of selling well.
