It’s a special treat to get to know yet another success story, today here on A living series talk.
Today we are fortunate to know more about our guest Sandy Butchers author of The Singularian Grimoire Anthologies.
Welcome all to
“A living series talk”
Hi Sandy, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself?
Hi Inderjit, thank you so much for reaching out! It still amazes me how we can communicate with people on the other side of the world with one simple click.
I was born and raised in The Netherlands, and have traveled to many countries over the past ten years. I went to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Scotland, and Portugal, and lived in Finland for a little over a year. This is where the spark for many of my stories ignited: surrounded by Scandinavian snow, ice, and quietness. You can imagine what a difference that must have been compared to the chaotic, everyday life of an author/artist in a country as crowded as The Netherlands!I’ve been writing since I was a kid, had my first publication at the age of 14, and made it on the country’s list of “Youngest Authors” at the time. Since then, I’ve written for art magazines and newspapers, had my work featured in Amazon bestselling anthologies, and now decided it was time for something more unique… more me, in a way. This is why I came up with the concept of The Singularian Grimoire Anthologies: a way to keep people engaged and dust off my own skills as an illustration artist: to immerse readers in a new and sprawling world.
Thank You, Sandy for letting our readers know about yourself! So, what have you written?
I’ve written so much over the past ten years! It’s been an amazing ride so far, being featured in international anthologies with short stories and drabbles (100-word stories). These short reads are like a red line throughout my entire writing career since I’ve been calling myself an author. However, most of my time is put into larger projects. I’ve written 3 full-length novels since 2018; one Adult fantasy, one YA fantasy (currently in the query trenches), and right now I am working on an Adult Sci-Fi, which is the follow-up narration to the Grimoire Anthologies of which you read a volume some days ago. So this last book and the entire The Singularian universe are pretty important to me, as they embody the culmination of my craft.
Let’s talk about creative writing process do you work outline for the plot? Or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?
Oh, I love this question! There is no simple answer to this really. I used to be a right-out pantser, allowing the plot to take over and shape itself. But as I grew as a writer, and sequels became more interesting in the writing process, I had to start making notes. In fact, this is how the entire Singularian Grimoire Anthologies came into existence on www.patreon.com/sandybutchers The back stories of the characters from the book became so complex, so vivid, that I wouldn’t be doing them justice if I cut them down to a novel-sized narration. In these Grimoire Anthologies, all the characters get their own moment to shine, their own backstory, their own intrigues… their own missions and destiny. So yeah, in a universe as complex as this one, plotting and outlining are really essential. Although, I am and will always remain a pantser by heart.
That’s sounds good, let’s explore more about “Birds of a Feather” If this book is part of a series, would you please tell our readers a little about it?
Birds of a Feather is the third book in the Singularian Grimoire Anthology series. Every month, a new volumes released with different characters (and some returning characters as well) and new illustrations, following an overarching story that will come full circle in the grand finale in December 2021. It’s about a world torn between two opposing forces. On one hand we find the scientific breakthrough that allows minds to be uploaded into machines (Singularians), while another, more sinister research facility tries to conquer the world through genetically engineered super-humans (Splices). Basically we are exploring the ehtics surrounding Transhumanism versus Bioconservatism. The first volume of the Grimoire Anthologies follows Sovren, the first and last remaining Singularian, who no longer remembers anything from his past. What he does know is that 2/3 of humanity has been wiped out and the surviving population holds him responsible. He wanders the continent trying to piece together the puzzle that was once his memory, hoping to prove his innocence and get rid of the bounty on his head. Through these 12 Grimoire Anthologies, we meet several people who know things about him or have, in some way, interacted with him (even without knowing it). So it’s a twelve-month web of stories with images that are connected to each other, ending in one hell of a finale.
Excellent!! I’m sure our readers are curious to know about your next book, what are your future projects?
For now, I am spending most of my time on The Singularian illustrations and stories. This series started in January 2021, so my focus is on getting this project out into the world. This interview is of course a wonderful way to get the word out! When this series ends in December, I will most likely start with another 12-part anthology… maybe one based on the YA fantasy (The Tattered Crown), but we’ll see.
Awesome!
Thanks again, moving on you seem to have a pretty tight schedule on things. How do you relax? Any special destress techniques as writing involves a lot of sitting?
Oh, absolutely! I’m not a full-time writer, so time management is key here. I’m a teacher in Design and Technology, so that takes up most of my time during the day. Thus, considering that I can only write on weekends or during evening hours, I had to find a way to make it relaxing as well. Lucky me I find it very relaxing to draw and paint… so these Illustrated Grimoire Anthologies are a win-win when it comes to time management and relaxing! But, life is not just about work (thank goodness it isn’t!). I love to go on long walks with my dog, and I do enjoy spending time out in the backyard with the chickens and the vegetable garden. I love to dig my fingers into the ground, so besides drawing and art, I think that gardening is my number 1 way to relax.
That sounds great! Talking about literally world and giveaways that’s already been the core practice of the writers and readers discover each other! Do you agree that giving books away free works and why?
Yes, giving books away for free is very important. The book market is saturated with amazing authors, so you are going to have to work very hard to make sure you stand out from all the others. Giving away books for free is, for me, definitely part of that. But I also realize that not every work of fiction, not every book, is suitable for that. I’m just lucky to have new stories appearing every month, and the books I give away usually leave my readers with more questions and –hopefully– an urge to get those answered. So for me, it works really well.
Thanks for your inputs and valuable thoughts! In what formats is your book available?
My books are available in .pdf and paperback, depending on the tier a patron chooses. The cheapest way to get those illustrations and stories, is to go for the e-book package, which will grant readers access to the .pdf books, all the illustrations, and behind-the-scenes footage. With $4,- a month, getting a new book every four weeks costs about as much as an average cup of coffee from your local Starbucks (or you know… something similar). But, for those who really want to touch and feel the work, there are paperbacks available which, to be honest, have my preference as well. Nothing beats the sensation of leafing through a book, being able to stare at pictures in the company of the typical smell of paper. It does something to a reader, you know? Anyway, the paperbacks come with much more benefits than the e-book package. It costs $10,- per month and in return, you’ll get exclusive access, your name in the book, early access to interviews (like this one!), and personalized artwork. And yet, for those people who have no budget, I still want my work to accessible for everyone. So there is a modified version of each volume, readable for free on my own website: www.sandybutchers.com . But those stories come without illustrations, and often leave you hanging at the cliffhangers…
Awesome! Let our readers know what keeps you moving? What is your favourite motivational phrase? If any could you please share with us?
“You try, you fail… You try, you fail. But the only true failure is if you quit trying.”
I know, it’s a cheesy one and not even from some philosopher or someone known for world peace or anything. It’s a quote from Disney’s The Haunted Mansion. To be honest, I don’t even like the movie that much, but the quote… well, I guess it just stuck with me, haha.
Wonderful! Thanks again Sandy! How can readers discover more about you and your work?
